Man dies, 6 family members hospitalized in Birbhum after eating turtle meat
A luxury bus carrying 50 passengers plunged off the Bhikund River bridge in Maharashtra's Akola district on Thursday evening, causing injuries to several passengers. The accident occurred around 7:15 PM due to a reported brake failure, raising concerns about vehicle maintenance and safety standards.
The passengers, residents of Washim district, were returning from a pilgrimage to Ayodhya when the mishap occurred. Thankfully, the low water levels in the river below prevented a greater tragedy. While no fatalities have been reported, two passengers sustained severe injuries and are currently under critical care.
The Balapur Police rushed to the site upon receiving the information and initiated rescue operations. The injured passengers were swiftly transported to a government hospital in Akola, where they are receiving medical attention. Local authorities lauded the quick response of the police and emergency teams, which helped minimize casualties.
According to a police official, the bus, traveling from Bhusawal in Jalgaon district to Washim, lost control after its brakes failed. "Of the 49 passengers onboard, five sustained minor injuries, and two are critical. Fortunately, there were no fatalities," the official said.
An investigation into the accident is underway, with initial reports suggesting a technical fault in the bus’s braking system. Authorities are reviewing maintenance records and exploring whether negligence by the bus operator played a role. The administration has promised stricter oversight to prevent similar incidents in the future.
This incident highlights the urgent need for stringent checks on the mechanical fitness of public transport vehicles, especially those operating long-distance routes. The Akola district administration has also urged transport operators to prioritize passenger safety through regular maintenance.
